Lefang, you are probably thinking of Andrei Titov, who was the Russian's second man in space.
But Gagarin was both the first man in space and the first man in orbit. In the US, we did parabolic missions first (Shepard and Grissolm), with our third man in space becoming our first man in orbit (Glenn).
The Russians were always a good deal more go-for-broke than we were, which is why they lost at least one man trying to get that first-in-space title.

Besides being the first man in space?
Womanizing, drinking... Funny story:
He got caught with the house maid by his wife and jumped out the 2cd story window to get away from her. Landed right on his face and basically cut off his left eyebrow. Russian doctors sewed on a prosthetic... but the eyebrow never looked the same. See some of his later pictures and you WILL notice.
