It seems like the problem should look like this:
8(n+6)=4(6-n)
Then to solve it: distribute
8n + 48 = 24 - 4n
Now just put the like things on the same side of the equation:
8n + 4n = 24 - 48
Solve:
12n = -24
n = -24/12
n = -2
To check your answer: plug it back into the equation:
8(-2 + 6)=4(6+2)
32=32

People already gave you the answer, but here is how you translate:
Eight times the sum of a number and six equals to four times the difference when the number is subtracted from 6.
Eight = 8, times = multiply, sum of = addition, number & 6 = n+6
Equals =
Four = 4, times = multiply, difference = subtract, number is subtracted from 6 = 6 - n
So:
8 * (n + 6) = 4 * (6 - n)

n= a number
Now lets translate the sentence into mathmatical equation
8(n+6)= 4(6-n)
8n+48= 24-4n
add 4n on each side
12n+48=24
subtract 48 on both side
12n= -24
divide by 12
n= -2

It's -18.
Here :
x will be the missing number so
8(x+6)=4(6-x)
8x+48=-4x+24
8x-4x= 24 -48
4x= -24
x= -24:4
x= -6 :)

This is how I was taught algebra........
8(x +6)= 4(6-x)
8x +48 = 24- 4x
+4x-24 -24+4x
12x+24= 0
-24 -24
12x = -24
----------------
12
x = -2
The answer is -2.
