OK dumbasses-- this is what is going on. over 44 mph your torque converter clutch locks (40/60%) in order to reduce slippage and provide more power to the wheels and reduce fuel consumpt. this converter clutch, especially in old or poorly maintained/ beaten trannys may stick / get stuck and stall your engine because at high rpm your engine does not have enough torque to rather bust the wheels loose- the torque (power) from the engine has to go smewhere and the wheels dont give so it locks your engine and stalls it (too much load) the reason you put your tranny in neutral and it waorks is that the torque from your engine just rather spins your mainshaft in your tranny (freewheel). I would recomend junking the car, it is not worth putting a new tranny in +TC unless it is sentimental.

Sounds like the PCM is going to die to me. Take the car to a comptent mechanic to get this problem resolved before you get stranded somewhere. Your car is sixteen years old and these parts won't last forever. The Ciera is a great car and one of the better ones made in that period. Ditto for the Buick Century. They have pedestrian styling for sure, but they run a long time.

I agree with the rest, sound like you're losing fuel pressure,
Check:
Fuel Filter,
Fuel Pressure regulator,
Fuel Pump
Run a few bottles of fuel injector cleaner down the tank may also help.

Could be fuel pressure (see other posts), but could also be the engine not breathing properly (PCV valve). You might want to check the PCV valve/exhaust gas recirculation system. If it is plugged or very dirty it could also cause this problem.

now if it were a Ford with this problem everyone would have a smart-*** answer to this question. it's the transmission torque converter lock up switch that needs to be replaced. Funny, my Ford doesn't have this problem, though.

You might have a head gasket leak. Check and see if you have antifreeze, and oil coming out your tailpipe. If you do. Time to buy a new car!
