how come they have such a huge worldwide following?

Alright, I know where you're coming from....I have been a huge U2 fan since the "War" album. But I think these days, after exploring 'more' than simply what media dictates for me to buy or listen to - I can't say they are the best band out there.
Check out: Primal Scream, Broken Scocial Scene, Arcade Fire, Stars, Wilco, The High Llamas, Mars Volta, Brian Jones Masacre, Franz Ferdinand,The Flaming Lips, "V", Boards of Canada, TV On The Radio, Radiohead (will a new kick *** album soon), and the Yeah Yeah Yeah's.
U2 have a massive following based on their 27 year track record. People like what's familiar to them. They're still writing good songs, putting on wicked shows, but there are bands out there now simply taking bigger risks, and exploring more musical ground. When compared to other classic acts, Here's the competition :Beatles, Zepplin, Rush, Floyd, Stones, The Who, Yes, Velvet Underground, The Clash, The Cure, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Smiths, Beach Boys, New York Dolls, The White Stripes, Queen, etc...) Although they're still somewhere in my Top 20

none, no band will ever be better than U2, they have such a worldwide following b/c the f*cking rock! INXS and Red Hot Chili Peppers are really good though too.

There are several bands better than U2, they have a huge world following because they've been together 20plus years and have done several world tours, also they're not bad,in fact ;better than most. Better Bands :The Red Hot Chilli Peppers

U2 are the best band in history. The Beatles were never around long enough and Stones have become a comedy tribute act to themselves. Pink Floyd never developed amongst in fighting. Only Queen have come close.

I love U2 but there are 3 bands I rate higher.
1. The Rolling Stones - because the sound is more eclectic.
2. The Who - they just are.
3. Pink Floyd - because they're more progressive.

Any country band/group is better than U2.

Because they came out with their own unique style well over twenty years ago that has stuck. Not to mention, they are not the typical "sex, drugs and rock-n-roll" band - they have continually tried to make a positive difference in the world.
