Australia is a very lucky country indeed. Rich in natural rescources; stunning landscapes and landforms - everything from barren deserts through to beautiful, cool, fragrant rainforests, breathtaking mountains only 60 miles west of
Sydney, big, lazy rivers, world-class beaches of fine, white sand and great surf and of course the Great Barrier Reef in the Tropical North off the coast of Queensland. There is work for those who wish to work - too many don't. Opportunities galore for those who chose to take up the challenge. Food is plentiful, fresh and reasonably cheap. Housing (outside the big cities) is still quite affordable. Schools are world-leaders in innovative educational advances. Health care is excellent and free for everyone. I've travelled the world and lived in many places, but will always come home to Australia and will always declare it to be the best country in the world. Now to the Aboriginal question. There are approximately 300,000 people who count themselves as Aboriginal - most are whiter than I - but that's another story. The Federal Govt. gives these people a base rate of $2 BILLION per annum (you do the maths). On top of this sum - countless millions of extra dollars are spent on health care, housing - you name it. No other country in the world spends as much on their indigenous people as Australia does. One of the big problems with this is that the indigenous agencies handling the distribution of this money are too often corrupt and nepotism is rife. Many aboriginal people in charge of distributing this money live as any millionaire would - with the result that too many of their own people are living in 3rd workd squalor - this is the only picture the rest of the world sees. So please, before you all start jumping up and down about the way Australia 'treats' it's Aborigines - do your homework!

'The Lucky Country' was a phrase coined by Donald Horne in 1964. He wrote a book of the same name, which critiqued Australia's complacency in the minerals boom of the post-war years. Australia was lucky to be able to ride the post-war boom years on the back of its mineral resources, but Horne contended that Australia should not rely on luck alone, but should use more foresight to maintain its economy.

It is the best place on earth to live and we have many resources and if we tried we could be self-sufficient. The climate is ideal, the people are nice and when we have a non-conservative government life can be close to perfect. We are like a small America without all the pretence and artificiality. It has much to offer in every way. I could go on..... but I love it here.
Of course this report ignores the Aborigines.... they are miserable and not so lucky. Our shame.....

Well, in the sense that most Australians enjoy a comfortable, safe, free existence (relative to the rest of the world), I guess you could say they are lucky.

Of course, Australians had to work hard to get those things. It wasn't just luck that gave them a good standard of living or a peaceful existence. But they were lucky to have inherited the individualistic and liberal heritage of English civilization.

Australia was originally used by the british to send their convicts to. England , back in the early to mid 1700's was full of criminals, their jail system was getting overcrowded and they neede a place to send these people. They were going to send them all to America, but we kicked their *** in war so australia was second choice. But the funny thing is, they basically came ashore in Sydney, And now Sydney is one of the most advanced cities and one of the most visited cities in the world.

I would say so. Being an Island nation, they don't have to worry about Border issues or being invaded. Unlike Japan, they can survive on their own because they can supply themselves.
