OK, you are telling me a lot with what you have there.

The two sides that are 27 inches have to form the legs of an isosceles right triangle. Therefore, the hypotenuse is the 3rd side. As a result of the Pythagorean theorem, the 3rd side has to be 27 inches times the root of 2. Or, about 1.41 times 27 inches.

You can use the Pythagorean Theorem for any 90 degree triangle (right triangle), a^2 + b^2 = c^2.

So, you will have 27^2 + 27^2 = c^2.
729 + 729 = c^2
1458 = c^2
sqrt(1458) = c
38.1837661 = c

Therefore, your third side will be approximately 38.184 inches.

From Pythagoras's theorm;
the third side is equal to the root of the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

ie C^2 = sqaure root of ( A^2 + B^2 )
now with A=B=27 inches

C= root(27*27 + 27*27)
C= 38.1837662

Pythagorean theorem: if c=longest side, a,b are the ther sides:

c^2 = a^2 +b^2

In an isosceles right traingle, if 2 sides are equal, they are the shorter sides (a and b). so:

c^2 = a^2 +b^2
= 27^2 + 27^2
= 2 (27^2)
= 2*729
= 1458

c = sqrt (1458)
= sqrt (2 (27^2))
= sqrt (2) * sqrt (27^2)
= 27 * sqrt 2
= 38.18 (to 2 decimal places)

First the hypotenuse is the largest side. And if there are tow side with the same measure 27inch each one, then the other side is the hypotenuse. Applying Pythagoras theorem we have:
a^2 = 27^2 +27^2 and so a = sqrt(1458) = 38.18 ...

using the pythagoras theorem
a^2+b^2=c^2
27^2+27^2=c^2=2*27^2
so c=(2*27^2)1/2
=(2)1/2*(27^2)1/2
=27 root 2
can also sub. the value of root 2
and say the answer is 27*1.414=38.178
but better to leave it as 27 rt 2
