Most of them were Greek-speaking Byzantines. There was also a contingent of Genoese, ie Italian, mercenaries, and a small number of renegade Turks.

The Byzantine empire. The eastern part of the Roman empire, it evolved with its own characteristics and was actually more Greek than Roman.
