I have had severe gerd (on a scale of 14 as normal on an acid test I got a 58...so yeah, when I say severe...) Medication and diet changes do not help, (It's been two years and even rice gives me a problem). My question is that I want to run cross-country because it is my last year of high school, but my gerd makes it very hard for me (I haven't been running since the diagnosis because it is so hard and it is aggrivated by the motion). Should I be running with my condition and/or are there any suggestions you can offer me on the subject ?(I have tried just about anything and little seems to work but I will give anything a try). Thank you.

I don't eat meat or dairy as it is because I am a vegan...however I am not sure if I can have antacids at all (besides my nexium...and a lot of help that does...but not really) because I am on another medication that interacts badly with them.

I do understand my situation is kinda crazy...I was also thinking about a raw diet...any thoughts on that (meaning raw fruit and veggies, raw nuts, and sprouted grains)

Chew Tums. I know that the extra water you drink and the motion of working out can cause acid to creep up, but the Tums seems to keep it under control.

Stay away from caffeine, fried foods and a lot of meat if you can. Dairy isn't a grand idea either. It's one bummer of a diagnosis. That's for sure.

Since you added that you are vegan, just limit the acidic foods, such as citrus, tomatoes...anything that might make the problem worse. I find a trip to the local health food store is a good resource for natural remedies as well.

I think running can be a bit hard on our bodies. I normally have no problems whatsoever with reflux or any stomach issues but when I run sometimes after eating it seems to burn my throat like I am about to vomit. I have found that running in the morning and with next to no food is the key for me to feel better. I am doing longer runs now and I need something to keep me going (10 miles is my max thus far) so I eat a sports bar 45 minutes before running and I am OK. If I eat any sooner than that there is that horrid feeling again. As your coach if you can get the training schedule in advance and run it solo early mornings or otherwise, if practice is after school, don't eat anything from lunch on and you might be fine. Good luck.

probably the most instant factor you'll do is to give up consuming espresso and cola... smoking isn't well both, however that perhaps tougher to give up... do not over-consume... do not lie down too quickly after consuming... do not burp an excessive amount of - this contains acid up with the burp... heartburn probably the most average symptom of acid reflux disorder disorder (often referred to as gastroespohageal reflux disorder, or gerd)... heartburn looks like a burning anguish within the core of the chest... it's prompted by way of acid from the belly backing up into the esophagus... is a symptom of acid reflux disorder disorder (gerd) often referred to as gastroesophageal reflux disorder

You should try taking a digestive enzyme supplement before you eat. They worked wonders for me.

They help your body to efficiently break down your food and consequently eliminate many gastrointestinal disturbances - like GERD.

I'm not a doctor, but I'd recommend you stay away from prescription and OTC medications, I think they can make the problem worse...

Check out www.wellzymes.com and select the "Digestive Health" or "Gastric Ease" products. They are all natural - and 100% vegetarian (and vegan) to boot!

Hope this helps - good luck!
