FOR a great one, buy a dual core intel off ebay because the prices are DROPPING in anticpication of the next level laptops due out next spring (64 bit atholons or 64 bit duals)
Because of this, the prices on the dual core intels laptops by dell (i got an E1505) are dropping to around $500-600 depending upon your configuration.
a dual core intel like E1505 has been on pcworld's best to buy list and can perform faster than a P4 and almost equivilant to a 3.2 ghz computer!

You'd be better off buying a used, well-cared for laptop than a new one in that price range. I have bought 2 laptops, both around $500 from ebay - from college geeks that just got a new job and getting a new laptop. Both still work wonderful after several years.... came with XP Pro too.

some of the best deals i have ever seen are here http://www.ubid.com
the only thing you need to pay attention to is whether it is a refurbished item or not
not that there is anything wrong with refurbished they all come with manufacturers warranty but if you want new you have to look at the details
ive bought several things from this site and hevent had even a little toruble

Here is a search from Best Buy. There quality is always pretty good, at least in my option.
