I agree with the quote for sure, but I'm not sure if Conservatism is finished. The small-government, low tax types are the actual Conservatives. Certainly a wedge has been driven between them and so called 'social conservatives', and I think that wedge will certainly push the two completely apart, perhaps as soon as the 08' elections.
Still, Conservatives won't be finished. They'll definitely lose some elections to this divide, however getting away from 'social conservatives' will refresh them and re-energize their cause. Moreover, they may pick up some support from people who are 'social Liberals' (pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, anti-war), but still want small government and fiscal restraint.

It's not finished. And they won on the economic side (to a certain extent). However, I think it was with the Terri Schiavo case that they began to fall. The vast majority of Americans saw that move by social conservatives as an intrusion into the most personal of life decisions. They got it wrong in stem cells too.
Anyway, they had power for too long and they got arrogant. It happens. It's part of our cycle. They're not dead, by any means. They're just down for a while. They'll figure things out again and regain some power. Plus, odds are Democrats -after taking power - will begin to get arrogant, too. Power corrupts. Happens to everyone who gets it.

you're basing Conservatism on one situation. In all different fields like abortion, the dimensions and overall performance of government, tax coverage, national protection and English by way of fact the best language, adolescents have a tendency to coincide with the Conservative circulation. Now, I bear in mind one submit you made a on a similar time as lower back asserting you as a teenager oppose comparable-intercourse marriage. does not that make you a "bigot" or a "homophobe" interior the eyes of the left? The conservative circulation will proceed to upward thrust as human beings get a sprint older and certainty sinks in.

Yes it is finished. It has been finished for a long time now. It was good advice for us when we (as a country) were just starting out, but now that we are one of the world powers, we can't support ourselves with our resources and we need all the help we can get. The requires getting involved with other countries in more ways than one.
By the way, I think you meant 'common enemy' not coomon enemy... lol

Let me get the door for you Mr. Conservatism.
I think the idea is more diluted, but I think the label will stay and people still relate the label with the ideal. I think it's still got some decades left in it. You should live in North Florida where everyone is a "Conservate". Including the pot smoking sex fiend gothic girl who doesn't go to church.

Yes - because conservatives have had power for about thirty years, and we are seeing the fruit of their governing style in New Orleans, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, and at the gas pumps.
Government is the tool with which we deal with our shared difficulties. To want to "drown [government] in a bathtub" is to say there is no such thing as an American community, and not one really wants that.

No. :) What you are going to be seeing, is a decline in Liberal Democrats in government. :) *shrugs* Don't believe it? Wait til the next election. Liberals are FINALLY being drowned out by the voices of the COMMON man. And the Common man is Conservative. It's happened 2x now. Since the Dems STILL haven't figured out how to talk to the religious voting block, without p*ssing them off, they're going to end up on the outside looking in, yet again.

Don't believe what you see, don't believe what you hear, don't you feel the empathy, if you close your eyes you can see the enemy. -- Bono
Actually Conservatism is nothing more than the roar of the war machine now as it fights in the middle-east and around the world for democracy. The enemy is conservatism which is facism in disguise.
