I have a friend who will be doing a cross country run for MS. His run will be across Canada and he needs sponsorships for his run. How do I get the sponsorships from the various companies and how do I get them to notice what he will be doing for MS research.

You contact the sponsorship person at the corporations. Or try the Community Contact people. Then call the News Stations, newspapers, all the dailies, weeklies and even the senior's newspapers. Some may run your ad for free, and promote the event, some wont. Contact your city or town council can they help with funding. Contact the cities along the route for accomadation gifts etc.
