The summer before your senior year is typically when you begin applying for colleges. Some have specific deadlines set, so be sure to check with the schools that you will be applying to. Many colleges/universities have "Junior Day" in the spring for high school juniors to go visit, but typically, most people visit in the summer before or in the early fall of their senior year.

I think it's best to apply as early as possible- usually between Sept and Dec 1, but it's okay to apply in the spring as well. If you apply after you graduate, you will lose an entire year of school. If you are going to do something like that, you might as well take a year or 2 of classes at a community college, and transfer.

Once the new applications are available, mid to late summer of your rising senior year. If you use the application before that, you may be writing an essay for the previous year. If you are applying for school scholarships, you have to apply before 12/01 or 01/01. Check the school website.

As far as visiting colleges, your junior year and first semester senior year. If it's far away, some people don't visit until they have been accepted and are really considering going there.

Second semester of your Junior year is the best time to visit colleges. And I would suggest applying at the beginning of your senior year. Don't just apply to one school, unless you don't want to go anywhere else. Look at ALL aspects!!!!! Compare schools...you might find some things about certain schools that you don't like and some that you absolutely love! Choose the school that's best for YOU...don't let anyONE else influence where you go. The decision is YOURS to make. Be sure YOU are going to be happy!

I can't tell you how many people I went to school with that said "I wish I would have gone to this other school...instead I came here because this is where mom and dad wanted me to go. Or "I came to this school because this is where mom and dad graduated from." Find a school that fits you...that's my best advice.

Best of luck!

The best time to apply for college is during the second half of your junior year and first half of your senior year of high school. You want to get your applications in as early as possible. If you wait, you may find that schools have already pretty much filled their incoming classes before they even look at your application. Scope out the schools you want to apply to, and then try to have all (or almost all) of your applications in before Thanksgiving, if not earlier.

You should start visiting colleges in your freshman year, and throughout then to the end of your junior year you build your resume, take demanding courses (AP or IB courses), have admirable SAT/ACT scores, etc. You should have all your standardalized testing needed done before the end of your junior year. Thus, the end of your junior year is the best time to start preparing those applications and letters of recommendations! Good luck!! :-)
