A college just offers a collection of degrees and a university is a collection of colleges. When you go to a university you are going to be graduating from one of their colleges, such as the business college.

The definition of the word depends on where you live. In Canada, a "college" is what the Americans call a "community college", a school offering training in more hands-on jobs. It's odd, however, because there are still the kinds of colleges which exist within a university. It's all semantics.

A college is a 4 year institution. A university "normally" or "traditionally" is a 4 year institution plus it offers advanced degrees- Masters and PhDs. Some colleges are liberal arts. (they offer degrees in the traditional areas: English, History, etc. They also offer business degrees, too.)

You are right, they are used interchangeably. They are both institutes of higher education.

And, from my experience- both colleges and universities are expensive.

college is not a private place of education. Most universities are private and very costly. Colleges on the hand like fullerton college are not as expensive and not private.

I go to a University and it's expensive. My nephew goes to a college and its affordable.

Captmhunt and Voxtar are correct but only for the definitions in American English. "College" versus university is defined somewhat differently in Canadian and King's (British) English.
