From the 80's U2 for sure (how many new bands can you name that sound kinda like U2, tons) INXS too. And Red Hot Chili Peppers, really influenced the whole funk rock thing.

alternative band? in the late seventies?... For me id have to say Iron Maiden. They were a part of the new wave of British heavy metal that was coming out at that time and they were a major influence on current bands like metallica, korn, pantera, anthrax and a string of 80s glam bands.
On the other side of the coin KISS were pretty massive and they aslo came out in the 70s
