I can absolutely recommend a Rat! A domesticated breed of course. They are affectionate, smart and humorous. It's best to get them in pairs, male, male or two females as they keep each other company. The male Rats are more fun, but I love my girls too.

The worst part is that they only have a two year life span and you can get very attached to them. But I look at it as giving a small animal with an undeserved reputation the best life possible. They are like little friendly dogs.

They're plenty of fancy rats at pet stores, but the albino white rats which are usually sold for snake food are normally rats that were bred under strict conditions to be used in experiments as "lab rats", when a lab rats breeder is over-stocked they will euthanize the colony or sell them cheap to these stores. The white albinos are bred to be disease resistant so that they will not spoil a control group. They have a tendency to live an entire two year span and are smart as the dickens!

I would recommend a rabbit. They are small, sweet, and cheap. They make excellent pets, especially if you buy them young and raise them yourself. Other good ideas would be a chinchilla, parakeet, or other small bird. I wouldn't suggest buying any reptiles or ferrets because of their heavy smells.

guinea pigs make great pets, they love to be held and fed, and interact with their people all the time. "Molly" loves attention, and gets excited anytime anyone heads for the kitchen - she loves to be out of her cage, loves to have her head scratched and her back rubbed, just loves to be loved on. They're smart little critters, and are good pets for small kids too provided they're treated gently. Molly goes to work every day, she's the class pet in a pre-school class and thrives on all the kids coming up to her all day.

You should get a sugar glider. Their like flying squirrls(i don't know how to spell that). Their small and are cuddly. They could fit in your hands cupped together. You can usually find them at pet shop.
