AVG and Mozilla won't do anything to speed your computer. One thing you might want to do is go to the top of the page, select "Tools" then "internet options" (I'm not sure if these are called the same things on Firefox) and then "Delete Temporary Files"

Also, run a System Tool called "Disc Defragmenter"... it should be available as an "accessory" when viewing "all Programs"

1) Check for spyware. Run both Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections.

2) Check that you have a least 10% of your hard drive free. Go to My Computer and right click on the Local Drive (C:). Look at the properties. If it has less that 10% free space, you will need to delete some files, or move them off the hard drive and on to a CD or DVD. Start by running the disk cleanup, which will remove temporary and other unneeded files. Go to Start, then All Programs, then System Tools and click the Disk Cleanup icon.

3) Run the msconfig utility. Go to Start, then Run and type in: msconfig
Go to the startup tab
You will see a list of all the programs that are loaded when your computer starts up. Uncheck any that you do not have to have. (Usually you can uncheck them all). If you decide you to need one, you can go back and recheck it.

4) Defrag the hadr drive. Go into My Computer and right click on the Local Drive (C:). Select Properties and go into the Tools tab. Click the Defragment Now button to start the defrag program. If you have not defrag recently (or never) it may take several hours for the program to complete.

I have Mozilla ( it is slow to do anything) have you checked what programs are opening when you "start up" the more that are opening the slower your P.C. will "boot up" and run, and it is possible that you have picked up spyware and other nasty stuff. Usefull programs to have Spybot search and destroy, Ad-aware and SpywareBlaster, the first two can have a look to see if any unwanted visitors have sneaked onto your system and the third helps keep any more joining them. I don't know AVG but my anti-virus software (Avast) can be set to scan the system for lurking nasties I am sure AVG has similar.

AVG is great virus protection and Firefox is gods gift to the internet. How many programs do you have running in the backround. go to start, run, and type msconfig in the box that appears check selective startup and uncheck load startup items, and restart. If you notice and considerable increase in speed then your all set. If not check your computers system specs, if you have less than 512 RAM slap the person you got the computer from. Head to circuit city and ask them what you need to upgrade.

You also need a firewall such as Zonealarm and a spyware detector such as Ad-Aware or Spybot-Search and Destroy.

Adequate for what? Security? It depends how you are using your PC. if you download a lot of Crap no AV will help you.

I would suggest adding ZoneAlarm and Ad-aware as well. You need a firewall as well as ad removal tools.
