A lot of people are not going to like me for this answer, but from what I've heard the best way to get a good job in game design is not to focus entirely on game design. Studios get *tons* of resumes from aspiring game designers, and they're really hard to sift through to find the best candidates.
I've been told by people in the industry that your best bet is to get good at another aspect of game development in addition to design. It's tough to prove yourself to be a good designer before you've been involved in major projects.
If you go to game design college, make sure you keep your horizons broad. Get good at programming or art for example. Your design flair will show through your work, which can open the door for a design job.
