Under the circumstances that he was under, he carried himself with great humility and leadership. No other president has ever been under the same circumstances.

While not downing Washington, for he was a great leader and general, his presidential prowess what not all that great. He was great for this country as the first president because he was a hero of the revolutionary war. He was someone the populous could look up to. Now if you want to talk the best president, I would take a look at Lincoln, FDR, Regan. Those three probably did more to keep this country together and make it one of the best in the world than almost all the other presidents combined. Look at like the this: Lincoln kept the union together during the Civil War, the bloodiest, nastiest conflict ever on American soil. He also freed the slaves. FDR brought us out of the great depression with help from WWII. However, his work programs such at the WPA and TVA started to lift the country up even before the war. And finally Regan, who decided the way to beat the USSR in the cold war was just to outspend them and drive them to bankruptcy. Now we are still paying the debts of two of these presidents, FDR and Regan because they spent a whole whole lot of money, but in the grand scheme of things, what they did not just for the morale of this country, but also for some of the others around the world is immeasurable.

Valid points, but the two term limit wouldn't have meant anything unless the presidents that followed shortly after followed suit. At the time, Washington was the natural choice....he was seen as the country's greatest leader (he was also a great dancer, and loved his Madeira.) But the best president ever? You would have to look at all of them and chose the one president who shaped the presidency and left his permanent "stamp" on it. That person would be....Bill Clinton!! *KIDDING!* No, in my opinion, it would be Thomas Jefferson. He understood that the president wasn't "above" anyone else in the US...unlike the Federalist, who insisted that the executive branch some how should be regarded on the same level as peerage in the UK. (Adams was a BIG proponent of this, and Washington didn't really discourage holding "court" either). Jefferson established that the president was, at his core, a public servant. He aggressively expanded the US, mostly through diplomacy, made exploration of the west a priority in his administration, and reinforced the idea that science, research, and logic would lead the US to greatness.

.From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Three Presidents—George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin D. Roosevelt—always are ranked at the top of the known lists.

Before you decide this trying doing a Google search under 'George Washington's Expense Account.'
Best president ever? He was certainly the first president to take advantage of government 'loopholes.'

He was a great president and a great leader. He lead the path of presidents to come.
But the thing about him that was a little off was that he wouldn't shake hands because he thought it was beneath him as the president.

Oh sure he was great, but he was also the first. THis was before presidents became tainted. However, while we cant compare him to anyone I would have to say its unfair to say he was the best. Brave yes, modest, maybe.
But my favorite is Teddy Roosevelt!

No argument here. I do think there are many great men who could vie for the honor, but Washington's a valid choice.

hmmmmmmmmmmm...You'll have to give me some reasoning, and then I will decide.
Oh, good. I thought it might have been the marijuana thing!
In that case, I will agree. You also forgot that there was no president before him to blame all of his mistakes on ! JK!
