there doesn't have to be a set number of poems. You could have a short book

Hi, I'm a writer, too, and written lots of poems and had some published. Books of poetry vary; if you'd like to put together a book try to come across a unifying theme in your work and put them in an order that makes sense to you--you don't have to be able to explain it, but the order should create an effect. Reading them all together should feel like a journey that develops. Not that many people sell books of poetry. You can self publish, but that is expensive for you. Probably the best way to get started in this business is to submit to small literary magazines. It's difficult. You get a lot of form rejection slips at first. But after your work starts appearing--breakthrough! Here are some tips: 1) you have to send a cover letter, but don't be elaborate. Don't say very much; let the poems speak for themselves. 2) Writer's guildelines always say to send up to five. It's never good to send just one, it makes it look as though that's all you ever wrote. Send three. Or four. Five seems overbearing. 3) Send out work every week. This will keep you from being too attached to one person's opinion. When you get back a rejection, say, "oh good, I can send this one out again." People like agents and small publishers READ THESE LITERARY MAGAZINES. Sometimes they'll even contact you. And yes, you can still use poems you've published in your book. Poets tend to have a list of credits to the magazines at the beginning.
Good luck, dearie.

I am not sure, but you try some books and check how many poems they contain. Your poetry book should contain the minimum pages as to look like a poetry book. Say, near about 75 - 100 pages.

Well, you seem to be a poet or a lover of poetry. It's a very good and interesting thing. Wish you all the best!

Gopal.

Around 60 pages is customary. Depends on the length of your poems. I'm a published poet. I'd like to read some of your poems. I taught poetry in the prisons and in a night care hospital for troubled adults.

It doesn't really matter. Look at any book of poetry and the answer will vary. If you self-publish, it can be as many as you want. But really, it's not the volume of work you've produced but how well it's received by a publisher. It's also if you've had individual pieces published, too.
