Are there any sober people with strong work ethics who are poor?

I guess it depends on your point of view. Someone who is born with money can afford to make a few mistakes in life and it's no big deal. People with no money can screw up once and have it effect them for their entire lives. Some people are able to get a better education than others. And some people can work hard and do the best they can with their circumstances and never get ahead. BTW, why does nobody begrudge the rich their fine alcohols but rag on the poor who kick back with a few beers at the end of a long, hard day?

I believe that there are. While many people are poor because of their own actions or lack of action, there are some people out there who have just fallen on hard times. Also, with the way things are in America now, class mobility is all but impossible for some.

to assume that all people who are poor are that way because of their own actions is blaming the victim. Most of the world is poor because the rich nations of the world want to keep them that way (lots of cheap labor). People are poor within the rich countries for the same reason.

In America...yes. Everybody I know who is poor is in that situation because they put themselves there. Look at how many immigrants come over here and do well.

I honestly don't think it should matter. My conscience tells me that i should help them, no matter what. The "why" doesn't even pop into my head. They have fallen on hard times, and I have the means to help them, so I do. However i can.
