AMD runs cooler, has generally cheaper prices, and faster components. Unless you plan on doing some hardcore multitasking (something you'd want hyperthreading for), I wouldn't even consider going Intel.

Intel had the lead in the early days from the Pentium and Pentium II. The Pentium III had some stiff competition when AMD released the first Athlon, but it still held a slight edge overall. Everything changed when the Athlon XP and Pentium 4 first hit the scene. The Athlon held the edge most of the time ever since.
Intel just released their newest CPU, the Core Duo (Conroe), which has a lot of promise. In every benchmark, it blows the Athlon 64/X2 out of the water. Intel's road map is well laid out as well, unlike AMD which has now an uncertain or unpublicized future. It's almost as if AMD and Intel are swapping places for the first time since the Pentium III.
The bottom line, however, is that both companies have strong offerings at the moment. Both have for the past few years. You really can't go wrong with either company...

it depends on what you are doing. for things such as gaming, etc. AMD has long ruled king. AMD exceeds when you have 1-2 large programs running that take lots of processing power. Intel on the other hand, is is a multi taking company. If you are the type of person who likes to listen to music, surf the internet, play a game and download your software's latest updates all at the same time, then Intel is for you. I do have to say though, the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors (not core duo, core 2 duo) are absoloutly phenominal. I recently got to try one out and they even blow the amd FX-60 out of the water, which is the 2nd best one they make. I would have to disagree with most of the people on this thread in regard to price, in my exerience Intel is typically cheaper and seems to be overall cooler (though not by much). Overall, they are both excellent companies and you should be happy either way you go.

If depends on what you using the computer for. If play lots of games an AMD is best for games. But if you are using it for music and photos a P4 is best for those type of things.
