I have a 1999 Ford Windstar SEL and every once in awhile when I turn and even more seldom as I'm driving straight after a turn, always at slow speeds, there will be a knocking sound. A couple of times when going very slowly over rough railroad tracks. Sounds like it's coming from around the driver's side front. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Your problem is the front left strut tower spring.
when stones or debris build up on the front strut lower spring seat it will start to make a popping or grinding noise. To fix the problem you'll Need to install rubber isolators to each of the front springs. I've worked on a few with this same problem and symptom.
