I have a 1994 Ford Escort with 180,000 miles on it. I spent $2,000 in the spring to get some transmission-related issues fixed. I want to keep the car another year, but now I need to replace the springs, at about $500. Should I repair it or am I just in the zone where every two months I'm going to be having another $500 to $1000 repair on a car that is really worth less than $1,000 at this point.

Dump it and invest in another vehicle with less mileage on it. The Ford Escort was introduced as an affordable alternative vehicle for those who didn't have a lot of money to spend. It was a car that went from point A to point B, it was never meant to accumulate over 100,000 miles. If you have one that does, then you have had your moneys worth from it. Unless it has some market value, or is a classic, it wouldn't be wise to keep it and dump more money into it. A vehicle with this kind of mileage will ALWAYS have something going out on it. You replace a weak part with a new part, then the next weaker part will go out, thus the chain of break downs.

i have a 2001 altima that I bought used and i'm having about 99 minor problems with it. If I were you, I'd just invest in a new car, by the time you finish spending all the money to fix your used car, you would have spent the down payment on a new car. Plus a new car is under warranty so you would be able to get a dealer to fix it.

well look at it this way, it's not worth much if you were selling it, but it's worth alot since you've sank so much money in it. The only other major work left to do is the engine. If you can afford it, upgrade. but if your like most of us, you've already sank all this money into this car and can't really afford to go right out and buy another used car that you might have to work on later. keep it, drive it till the wheels fall off, or the engine goes. then go get you something better!

Don't try to keep an old clunker going unless you can do the work yourself. The 2000 you spent in the spring was not a good decision.
