before there were common methods of digital reproduction silkscreening was preferred in commercial art because it's you can make several copies and do it pretty simply. as stated above, pop-artists like Andy Warhol liked this method because it matched the modes of mass production that he/they were trying to make a statement about. silkscreen began as an industrial technology in the 1930's. a good article for this here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silkscreen
