That would depend alot on were in the country you like. It sounds like a garter snake or ribbon snake. IF it is both are harmless except for the smelly stuff they tend to "pee" on you when they get excited. It's harmless but smells bad. Ribbon snakes are found more in the southern states. Garters are all over. They are related, but vary in appearance. They both have teeth but are very small. My 24 inch ribbon snake bites occasionally, u can hardly feel it.
If you're not 100% sure of what kind of snake it is, leave it alone. Especially if you live where poisonous snakes could be present. Snakes arn't out to bite humans. They may if they feel threatened. Some are more agressive, but the 2 i mentioned will run away before a confrontation.
Garters eat crickets, bugs, ect. Ribbon snakes eat bugs, and small fish. Not people.
Still, be safe, especially with children. I don't know where u live and some states have some dangerous snakes that inhabit the region. The Smaller u are the more a poisonous snakes venom will affect you. Children can die from a bite that an adult can survive. The old saying...its better to be safe than sorry...is always worth remembering.
