Pregnancy signs and symptoms occur either at the time of a missed period, or a week or two later. Symptoms include missed period, fatigue, tender and swollen breasts, implantation bleeding, nausea and or vomiting, food aversions, frequent urination, and increased sensitivity to odors. Not everyone experiences symptoms, and some people feel some but not all symptoms. Implantation bleeding occurs a bit earlier than expected, and it is scanty, spotty, pinkish and not red and heavy like a period, and does not follow the normal pattern of a period (light to heavy to light). The best time to test for pregnancy is at least two weeks after a missed period, and a blood test is the most accurate way of testing.

You can only become pregnant when you have sex when you are ovulating, which normally is about 11-14 days after the first day of your last period. The pregnancy test you buy from the store detects for a hormone called hcg. It takes about two weeks after becoming pregnant to be able to detect it. This is why they recommend you to check on the first day of your missed period. You can try up to 5 days before your expected period, but the results may not be accurate. Meaning, even if the test is negative, you may still be pregnant. It is just that the hcg levels are still to low to be detected.

In short, it isn't so much as how soon after sex, more that you should check the day after a missed period for accurate results. And usually, no, symptoms do not happen one week after, but everyone's different.

Prenatal Care
If you are pregnant, you need to see a doctor as soon as possible to begin getting prenatal care (medical care during pregnancy). The sooner you start to get medical care, the better your chances that you and your baby will be healthy.

If you can't afford to go to a doctor or clinic for prenatal care, there are social service organizations that can help you. Ask your parent, school counselor, or another trusted adult to help you locate resources in your community.

During your first visit, your doctor will ask you lots of questions including the date of your last period. This is so he or she can estimate how long you have been pregnant and your due date. Doctors measure pregnancies in weeks. It's important to remember that your due date is only an estimate: Most babies are born between 38 and 42 weeks after the first day of a woman's last menstrual period, or 36 to 38 weeks after conception (when the sperm fertilizes the egg). Only a small percentage of women actually deliver exactly on their due dates.

A pregnancy is divided into three phases, or trimesters. The first trimester is from conception to the end of week 13. The second trimester is from week 14 to the end of week 26. The third trimester is from week 27 to the end of the pregnancy.

Everyone is different, I didn't find out until 3 months later and I was still having my period. So if you believe you are pregnant, you should test yourself once a week for about 8 weeks. Make sure you pay close attention to any changes in your body, mood and eating habits (too much or too little). It could be a sign!!

There are some women who say they knew (via that "gut instinct") the moment of conception. But mostly, wait until your period is due to arrive, then two weeks past that. If you're two weeks late, do a test. Symptoms don't show up right away, though, no.
