I used to do it often until the cops started harassing me. In my city you are presumed to be up to no good if you are out walking past midnight (I usually wasn't out that late, but so what if I was? I'm an adult minding my own business). They have even presumed I was a hooker and sent an unmarked car with an officer to ask for services. Other than that I used to feel pretty safe, not too many problems with other walkers or drivers. Most people just minded their own business. It really felt good to walk at night because the air was so much cleaner.

No. A friend of mine was walking in San Francisco and he was knocked down from behind and his wallet was stolen and his fiance's purse taken. He's 6' 1" and 210 so he's not exactly a shrimp.
We also have had a rash of car break ins with one of our areas having 15 cars broken into on one block. When my friend called the police he was told to go online and file a complaint.
Poor parenting, poverty, and the lack of respect in our cities is at an epidemic level and until it changes, the U.S. will be a dangerous place.

I don't live in the city, but where I live the roads have no shoulders and most drivers speed, so I always walk on the side against the traffic. It's weird to worry about getting hit by a car instead of getting hit over the head or robbed.

No, even in the affluent neighborhood I used to live in, a man grabbed me from behind as I was running. I fought him off, but the detective that I reported the incident to called me some months ago, asking for a lineup identification because the perpetrator was at it again, in the same neighborhood.

It depends on the part of the city.
I'm in Caracas.
Because, there are places like the plazas of some places in where you can see a lot of people talking at 2:00 am!
