The information stored on cd's is in the analog format and not digital, that's why when you copy a song from a cd to your hard drive only a 4kb file gets copied. What you need to do is first rip the tracks from your cd into '.mp3' or '.wma' (if your mp3 player supports wma I would suggest this format, it stands for windows media audio and it's pretty much the same quality as mp3 but the file size will be reduced to a better extent). You can rip your cd from Windows Media Player 10, or Winamp, or even Itunes, etc. Just insert the audio cd, open the media player, go to rip (as in the case of Windows Media Player 10 or 11) and select the tracks you wish to rip and then just click on 'Start Rip'. After that's done navigate to the folder that has the ripped tracks and transfer it to your mp3 player using the right click (that is if your mp3 shows as an external memory drive) or use your default mp3 players application.

Need to use software that came with your MP3 player.
My sony came with sonic-stage, which has an "import from cd" option.
