Lots of reasons:
They could of just waited on a customer vying for the "worst a**hole of month", award. Then you show up giving them another problem to deal with, minor as it is.
The boss just plucked their last nerve for the day.
That time of the month and cramps are a bi**ch!
That just got some of the worse news they could have ever imagined, on the telephone, during their break, and they still have to complete their shift.
They're pulling a double and are on the second half of it and dead tired.
They are young and inexperienced and unprofessional in their manner and need to be trained properly in customer service.(Sometimes it's the older experienced ones too!).

I worked for years in retail management, and now work at a bank. And I may be strange.... but I, personally, always enjoyed entering the digits by hand. It takes all of what.. a second and a half if you know how to type and really isn't a big deal.
I'd say the associates you have run into are just moody and there to get a paycheck rather than actually do their job well. You don't have to like your job, but in the service industry, you have to at least pretend while you are on the clock!

It is the extra time it takes, many cahiers are expected to run a specific amount of money per hour, or day. Spending extra time with you slows down the rate at which customers get rung through. They shouldn't have this additude because it isn't your fault but it can make them look bad. Customer service should be the priority not getting people out as soon as possible but the business has different priorities than customers want some of the time.

Well, think about it. They are trying to get you through the line as quickly as possible because they have a lot of other customers to run through. When the magnetic strip doesn't work, it takes a lot of extra time to type in the numbers, verify they're correct, and then send the info. It slows them up, and everyone else, and pulls them out of their "zone." Then they have to try to speed up to make up time lost and find their way back into work-mode. Wouldn't that annoy you, too?

I've worked retail and honestly it's the whole thing of not wanting to manually punch all the numbers of the card including the expiration date in and hoping you don't miss any numbers in the process. Either that or you just automatically the card is either bogus or declined and you know that they're gonna want you to try it again and again. But most likely it's just the inconvenience of having to punch in numbers. This doesn't mean that they're mad at you, just pissed at the situation. I've been on both sides of the counter in the situation and it sucks for everyone

Because they have to enter the number in by hand and that takes longer and it's very easy to make a mistake, plus if they have a big queue waiting it's very frustrating. If you have a magnetic clasp in your wallet or anywhere near where you keep your cards get rid of it, they screw up the magnetic strip.

i work at walmart as a cashier we only have a certain amount of time to get a person through the line. when a card wont work we have to call a customer service manager. it takes away from our time to get you through the line. our time helps us get a raise or it slows us down and then people thinks you can do ur job well. and then on the other hand people dont respect our job that we do most people complain on us for being to slow, or try to put there problems on you.

If you are in a check out line, in a store as a customer, you are the scum of the earth, regardless.

In my experience they A. either are having a bad day or B. are just being really bitchy. Either way, just suggest that they use the Walmart technique. Stick it in a plastic bag and run it through that way. If they are smart enough to do it right, then it will definitely work.

Because they work a lousy dead end job only making minumum wage, and because you're strip doesn't work...they actually have to type in the numbers, which makes more work for them..and they actually have to think for a second to type it in, and they aren't being paid enough to think.
