How did Captain James Deaken loose his eye on the show Law and Order Criminal Intent?

I have been watching from day one and don't remember seeing that episode or remember it even being addressed.

In real life Jamey Sheridan has both eyes...I dont think it was ever explained on the show, but a friend told me he heard he lost it in the line of duty *got shot in the face..but I cant find anything to support that* In real life, I recall reading he has a eye condition that forced him to wear the patch
