Are you using Outlook Express? If so check this: click Tools->Options. Then click on the 'Security' tab. See halfway down 'Download Images'. Make sure the checkbox is empty/unchecked.

Your question is not complete without the following information: 1) Your browser
2) Which email you are checking(Yahoo, Outlook etc.)
3) whether you are behind a firewall
