AKA: how do i get free internet through other peoples services. Do you have to have a modem; or a router?

if you have a laptop with a wireless card, just start walking and find some connection not protected with WEP, if you have a desktop need a wireless card and see if one of your neighbors have a wireless LAN not protected with WEP

Thats illegal. You can't take someone else's wireless signal without them knowing about it. There was a case in Ohio recently where the guy got caught and was fined $250 for the 1st offense. Getting it from a library or a starbucks is fine because they advertise it, but otherwise its illegal.
