I agree with R&G.

I also am very impressed with Golden Horse, a Hong Kong style Chinese restaurant at the corner of California and Hyde. You can get a first class two or three course dinner for two with very high quality ingredients there for $25 or less, and they have an extensive group/family dinner plan menu as well. It's clean and classy (newly remodeled) and the service is fast.

SF has a lot of good date restaurants. The Waterfront on Embarcarderro is really nice. You can sit in the outdoor covered patio and have a beautiful view of the Bay Bridge. The food is delicious. Very pricey. Theres also Boulveard on Embarcarderro. The view isn't as great as the Waterfront, but the food is great. Very pricey. Down in Ghireldeli Square there's a modern Vietnamese restaurant called Anna Mandera. The interior is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. It's multileveled with private sitting areas. There's a small indoor fountain that leads up to the bar where, a live band plays. Very pricey.

If you like dim sum we go to Yank Sing in SF http://www.yanksing.com/. Every visitor we've had has enjoyed it. I would warn you that the prices add up, though.

You could go to Mings in Palo Alto http://www.mings.com/.

You could stroll down Castro Street in Mountain View and see what looks good. If you're going to have a party - try it out first and see if you like the food and atmosphere. There are so many wonderful places it's hard to choose.

Have a great time!

I lived in San Francisco's Chinatown for ten years or so. There were 18 restaurants I passed when I walked exactly one block west, so it is hard to choose just one. Many of them have good food at good prices. Try walking on Jackson or Washington between Kearny and Stockton. That's one of my neighborhoods.
