I'm enjoying creating my own backgrounds, but I need to know how big-(width and height) -to make a 'centered' image, and also the width and height for the 'top and bottom' image selection. Sometimes it seems to fit-and other times it doesn't. I keep changing the width and height of jpegs, but it seems to change when I go back to view my page, when I'm not in 'edit custom theme' mode. It's really getting frustrating! Can anybody help?!

the width will vary depending on who is viewing your page. The common size to build a page for is 800x600, so about 765-780px wide image. As far as height, that depends on a lot of factors, but if you make it about 550 or so and set the style background-position to "center center" it should work.

I would usually say that a size of 400 x 240 px is a safe size as it give menu options on both sides
I use a static side and mobile center as on the site bellow

It Depends on Screen resolution you are designing for.

What ever resolution you are designing for, that is the dimension you need to make. the fact it is centered doesn't matter.

for example, if it is for a 1024x768 screen, then the image needs to be that size.

As a Minimum size, i would recommend 800x600

You may be better off making it stretched instead.
