So hard to say. My top 5 all-time:

Cy Young
Christy Mattheson
Nolan Ryan
Walter Johnson
Don Drysdale

No one pitcher now really dominates but Roger Clemens and Randy Johnson have to be close to the top, although they are on the downhill side of their careers.

Let me start by saying that Nolan Ryan was a great pitcher, but he isn't in the top twenty. His ERA+(ERA relative to league average) was 112, which means he was about 12% better than average. By contrast, Randy Johnson, Greg Maddux, Tom Seaver, Pedro, and many other modern pitchers had numbers over 120. Johnson, Maddux, and Clemens are all in the 140's.

The greatest pitcher was probably either Walter Johnson or Lefty Grove. Best combinations of durability and quality. There are only two things pitchers can do....throw alot of innings, and pitch well. They both did it as well as anyone.

The best pitcher today is probably Clemens. He is as likely as anyone right now to throw 7 or 8 good innings.

I Think that the greatest pitcher of all time is pitching now.

toss-up between Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens.
I've never been a fan of the teams these two have played for.

The greatest from years past, I would select Lefty Grove or Walter Johnson

Man there are a lot of people who know nothing about baseball.

The best pitcher of all time is Cy Young (500+ wins)

The best current pitcher is Greg Maddux (just look at his consistency and he won all those games with a mediocre fastball)

For 1 season, Bob Gibson 1969 was by far the best. For a career, there are several contenders: Cy Young (the awards named after him), Nolan Ryan, Satchel Paige, and the best lefty, Warren Spahn among others. Relievers Eckersley, and Fingers come to mind.

Right now, Curt Schilling, or Pedro Martinez

Are you kidding me? No mention of Sandy Koufax? He was the best pitcher of all time. He dominated the game when he was a pitcher. The best pitcher currently I would have to say is Carlos Zambrano. Albeit he's young, but when he get's going he's going to surpass Clemens and all the rest.

Lots of em could be listed as best. Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Cy Young of course.
Today, it would be a tie for 2 MN Twins pitchers. Yohan Santana and Fransisco Liriano.
