i would have to say wolverine...he is in every movie and his character is really strong

You are completely right,a good first part of the movie focused on him, which is where he met rogue. And then the second movie in fact focused for the majority almost entirely on his past, and the third he was a central character. And then he recieved his own spinoff, so far the only character from the x-men series to do that, with the sequel in production right now. The title X-Men is just a title, Wolverine was still the one focused on. You are 100% right in this scenario.

"Main character" does not mean "most powerful." It's the protagonist, or the character whose point of view the work most closely identifies the viewer with. In the first movie, we were focused on Rogue, for example. The second was Wolverine. I haven't seen the third, but based on reviews, I assume it was Jean.
