Try the Dark Carpatians books by Christine Feehan. Yes, there's lots of sex and blood-drinking! This series is about a race of blood drinking creatures from the Carpathian mountains. If they don't find their soulmate they turn evil and become vampires who kill indescriminately and must be hunted down and exterminated by the remaining Carpathians. The Carpathian race is slowly becoming extinct though, because of a problem keeping the children alive. They also happen to have next to no women left. For a while they thought keeping the race alive would be impossible- until they find out that thier soulmates don't necessarily have to be Carpathian... Some Carpathians' soulmates are human. There is this little problem of how to convince a human woman to put up with a powerful shape-shifting, blood drinking, vampire-like, vampire hunting, egomaniac though.
Things I liked about this series: Passionate and occasionally kinky love scenes. These books are pretty easy to find- available in most bookstores. I love new takes on the old vampire mythology and this was definately a new take. The good guys are basically invincible except for the part where they need to find thier soul mate or totally loose it. Even sexy invincible Carpathian men can survive without a woman! Lol!
Things I didn't like: After about the first 6 or 7 books you start to feel like you've read this one before. Her newest books in this series are starting to be a little fresher, but there for a while it was like reading the same story over and over. The love scenes started to loose it for me after getting halfway through the series. Again, it was like the same thing over and over. Also there was a certain innocence to some of the female characters that I liked that was starting to be lost about halfway through the series and still seems to be missing. I wish she'd bring some of that innocence back- it was kind of a turn-on.
Also try the Dark Hunter books by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Another awesome new take on the old legends! Not only do we have the requested vampire-like creatures, but these books are chock-full of great ancient mythology. Ever wonder what the ancient gods are doing nowadays? :) Still bickering amongst themselves and making trouble of course. This is another series where there are both a bad version of vampires and a good version of them. But of course, even our good guys are "Bad Boys!" Our main characters are a group of sexy brooding immortals known as the Dark-Hunters. Each one is an ancient warrior who traded his soul to the goddess Artemis for a chance at vengance. Being a Dark-Hunter has it's ups and it's downs. Working for a most impossible b*tchy goddess for all of eternity being a down, but at least they have Acheron as a go-between so they don't actually have to deal with her directly. Poor Acheron... And getting to dust "Daemons" for a living is definately an up.
There is just NO possible way to sum up all the great aspects of these books. If you go check out the website you'll get alot more out of that then you would any ten-second review I could write on here. http://www.dark-hunter.com/
Check out http://www.kinleymacgregor.com/hunter//acheronstory.htm
for the short story "The Beginning"- a great teaser to get you interested and also an important part of the future plot.
What I like about this series: Again we have some great love scenes. These however (unlike Feehan's) haven't gotten stale. Sherrilyn Kenyon makes this series so multi-faceted there's no way I could be bored! It seems new secrets and twists are revealed with each new book. The mystery that is Acheron ("Ash") is slowly unravelled tiny piece by piece throughout the series. Each book is a complete story of it's own but answers questions from the last book and sets up for the next book. There are things on the website that help illuminate parts of the books. I like to get on the website and look around for anything new between reading a new book and waiting for the next one to come out.
I think the talent Mrs. Kenyon has for having all her characters have such true-to-life personalities, all different from each other, is amazing! All of her heroes and heroines are different from each other and believable.
WARNING: this series is seriously ADDICTING!!!
What I dislike: I seriously DISlike the fact that the newest book hasn't come out in paperback yet so I can afford to buy it!!! Grrrr!

Laurell K Hamilton Vampire Hunter Series. They were good up until the last 3 or 4.
The Charlaine Harris series already recommended is my favorite. The only other one I read is Kim Harrison.

Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake books
Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark-hunter books,
Susan Sizemore's "Prime Series (Starts with "I burn for you")
Susan Squires has a good series, but there's only three out so far
Lynn Viehl's "Darkyn"
Keri Arthur's "Full Moon Rising" is most excellent, involves werewolves as well
Also, Jeanne Kalogridis "Diaries of the Family Dracul"

not as intense as i think you want, but great any way. awsome stuff. if you like um read the Demonata series (no vamps, some warewolves though...). they are a lot more intense than Cirque too.
