Snow is basically frozen water, water in liquid form abosbs all the colours of the spectrum and is therefore transparent. But as snow it's crystal form reflects the white light giving it a white appearance, when it melts it just stops reflecting the light.

Snow is white because the crystals of frozen water reflect light instead of absorbing it. What little light is absorbed is absorbed over all wavelengths, so the snow appears white. When snow melts, the crystals become liquid and has different physical properties.

its never really white, it's like when you cut up ice, like in a slushy, it just looks white because it has been just, + ice is a crystal like structor and...I lost my train of thought... oh yeah, its not the ice your seeing its the gass thats trapped within it...or something like that, like oxygen.
