NSs -Ninja Snails. What they do, (they are very sly and some of the best trained snails out there) is they are very well discuised as rocks and when you are not looking they slowly move towards the plants... keep your eyes on the rocks... they move...you never see these snails though, you just see the bite marks in plants.
The rain produces more of these sly creatures.
The ones you see are less well trained snails are called "Trainee ninja snails" and aren't as good but slowly work their way up to perfection, they take longer to hide and don't like it when you poke their eyes.
lol.

contrary to popular opinion, snails are the fastest animals on the planet. When we see a snail, it has slowed from its normal warp speed. When they suddenly disappear they have actually wheeched behind u and are all in a line. Because u dont suspect them of this sneaky behaviour, u dont look behind u but continue to look at the grass/bush/wall where they were a second ago.

I think you are referring to winter when most species of snails and slugs hibernate.
In winter or in dry seasons, some snail species hibernate in their shells by building an operculum for protection, and which is destroyed in spring or when their surroundings becomes wetter. Some species gather and hibernate in groups while others bury themselves before hibernating.

You can find out all you need to know about snails on the following site:

Hope this helps:>)

They are actually a highly advanced race who have mastered teleportation. So they beam each other around. They have to do this otherwise it would take an age to get home. The unfortunate thing (for them and us) is that they love hanging about in gardens.
