I just want a simple fish! Gold fish are dirty I hear. I heard betta's are cleaner but I went on the website and they seem tough to maintain. How much does one small betta cost? Life expentancy? Food expense? Necessities?

You don't have to put a live plant in there, but it will help boost the oxygen content of the water. A betta is around $3 and they live, with most people, 1-3 years. A bottle of betta food is around $3-5 and will last you for months upon months. You only need feed them 3 crumbs of food twice a day...watch him eat, see how many crumbs he eats at once, don't feed any more than that.

When you change the water, only change out 25% at a time, once a week. You will increase his chance of sickenss or dying by changing out more than this. If the water gets cloudy, etc. you are overfeeding your fish. You need to buy water conditioning liquid to add to the new water. This will run you about $6-8 a bottle, but it will last you a long time.

Basicly, for under $20 you can be set up pretty well to maintain a betta for 6 months- 1 year. This is assuming you already have the tank or bowl. I think you might be the same person who posted about a vase before, so you already have that.

All fish are a lot of effort to keep this is even true of bettas. Plants are not needed, but you betta will prefer to have something to hide under every so often. (Note an unhealthy plant is actually bad for your betta.) You will need at minimum:

1) 2.5+ gallon bowl/tank (small container will require twice weekly water changes)
2) Either a chemical agent to dechlorinate your water, or a large open mouthed container equal in size your betta's bowl/tank.
3)Gravel or marbles
4) 1 betta (don't try putting in another betta even a female.)
5) 1 fish net
6) Betta food (it's primary ingredient should be worms/insects/shrimp/fish)

This will cost you 15-20 dollars.

Once per week you'll need to remove the betta, and wash out his bowl/tank, and fill it with the water you've left out to age for 2 days. See below link for details.

Note that a filtered tank will allow you to do less frequent water changes.

Betta's are good fish to have. you dont want to put more that one in a tank. I'm not sure why, I think they eat each other. You can by them pretty cheap like $2 or $3. wallmart has them, they will be cheaper than a pet store. My grandma kept her fish alive with out a plant for almost 2 years the water would get pretty dirty sometimes. the plant help the water stay cleaner but her fish didnt really care. Food is like $4 for a bottle but it lasts forever. I dont really know how long they should last my grandmas died when my grandpa fed it little wax beads instead of its food. Just dont feed it wax and change its water once a week and you guy will be happy together.

You dont need a plant with a betta. You can get them for a few bucks at your local fish store. Not sure about the life expectancy, probably a few years. food isn't that expensive, a few bucks would be several months worth. A small tank would be better than a bowl (easier small water changes--easier to find a filter that would fit, easier to run an airline into it). But if a bowl is all you have, you should at least put an air line in it . They're one of the easiest fish to keep.

A betta is about 3-8$ depending on where you buy it and what type you get.

If taken cared of properly, a betta can live up to 5 years with the average being 3 years.

Please do not listen to anyone who says a betta can just live in a bowl. They cannot happily thrive in one. Wild bettas lived in small puddles in their native land, yes. But there they had their own ecosystem and it was different.

Please get your betta a tank (a 2.5-3g is ok, but bigger is always better...however, do not keep any other fish with your betta) that has a filter, air pump, and most importantly, a heater. Bettas are tropical fish and should be treated like one.

Bettas should have a well rounded diet including betta pellets and brine shrimp.

You don't have to keep a live plant in with your fish, but it adds oxygen to the tank and looks prettier than a regular "no fishing" sign.

Don't forget to do weekly water changes just like with any other fish and to buy START RIGHT to get rid of chlorine to your new water.
