I was at a car dealership, and I pointed out to my brother, who was buying the car, "look, a sunroof!"

The salesman said, "No that's a moonroof". I thought if it retracted back, leaving an open roof, it was a SUNROOF.

So, whats the difference?

Sunroofs you would see in the old BMWs etc where they are painted the body color and most of the time metal. They will slide open, but you can't see thru them. The moonroofs are glass-- you can see the moon thru them at night without having to open the "sunroof"

Accoroding to this Q&A i found, the original sunroofs are those metal ones (no glass panel) where you only get light/air in if you open it.
Moonroofs are the glass panel ones that you can let in air/light by titling or sliding open.
So most cars today have Moonroofs, sunroofs are history.

I think the moonroofs are the ones that can slide open completely, whereas a sunroof is a window that only cracks open.

They are both the same. It is just a different name for the same thing. Apparently, some car companys think a moon roof sounds more elegant or sophisticated than a sun roof. Just like when a T roof was big years ago, some companys called it a T Top, some a T roof, some a split roof.

A sunroof is made from metal and is the same color of the car. A moon roof is tinted glass with a sliding visor over it.

Sunroof goes straight back. The moon roof lifts up and back, or if you don't want it all the way open, it will crack up and open in the back a little.
