The Jam had their time and their influence but as a band in the media they were unable to communicate and so did not make the full impact that they could have. They were under-managed and depended on live gigs to spread the word. Times changed in the mid 80/90's and they could have been more potent then. Despite that, the music is still fantastic.

I was lucky enough to see the Jam 5 times live when i was younger but i would have to say the Clash were the best. But Paul Weller is a master of music and going underground is one of my all time faves

I'm not surprised that The Jam are being re-discovered by hoards of new listeners..young and old! They emerged from the dying embers of Punk like a Phoenix, and drove the post-punk new wave scene to a new place of passion and angst. What I also thought was attractive about their sound, was that it was typically English...They weren't singing about lying on beaches or having loads of 'Bling' or singing in sue-do American voices, selling themselves out or playing out of context. They were pure 'authentic; British beef and wrote songs that we could all identify with, from our experience and culture. Paul Weller was a young man singing for his generation about the reality of our scocio-political climate of the times. In time they'll be as highly regarded as the Kinks, Small Faces and not far behind the Who.

Their first couple of albums weren't that good, but Paul was very young so I'll let him off. Fantastic from "All Mod Cons" onwards. For my money the best bands around at the mo are The Shins and Wilco.

I have to agree the classic bands are the best. But I prefer Depeche Mode and New Order, and I think the 80's is the best period of music ever- keyboardists are geniuses...
