Mold has been around since before there were houses. It's a fungus and it spreads by spores, which are everywhere. People have always gotten molds growing in their homes; it's not at all a new thing. Molds need moisture, warmth, and food, and there are plenty of places in our homes that supply all three. Bathrooms are a prime example; that black mildew stuff that grows on shower curtains, windows, and behind the toilet is a mold. Household mold became a big topic in recent years when a number of people had serious medical problems that were related to their exposure of household molds. But molds have always been around, and people were probably getting sick from them, too; it's just that they didn't know what was causing their problems. Also that they weren't trying to get their homeowners insurance policies to pay for damages...
Anyway, you can kill any visible mold with a diluted bleach solution or those handy wipes that contain Clorox. Then you need to keep the area dry or the mold will come back again. The trickier part is the mold you can't see, which can develop in the walls from a slow leak or in the floors when the washing machine flooded the room and soaked into the subfloor. That's why it's important to deal with any leaks immediately. But it's a natural phenomenon, not a terrorist plot.

I don't think people relized how bad mold was, it was not that long ago they figured out that mold was "the curse" of king Tut's Tomb, it was a mold only prevailent in very dry dark places ie:a Tomb, when people who had entered the Tomb started dying, they automatically thought it was the "Curse".
As biological terrorism,a type of mold is probably sitting in a refridgerator in some secret place some where in the world!!

It was much more of a problem in the past then it is now.
So no "biological terrorism" (watching too much CNN?)
It is only in recent times that more fuss is made because now the relationship between mold and some illnesses is better understood, while in the past it was not.

It has always been a problem. Why are we seeing it more now? Because everyone has become aware of leaks, and has their house so highly insulated that air can't flow any more. No air flow = mold. No air flow = moisture. Moist area invites mold.

house mold has always been problem in humid environments.
the thing is that folks now just tend to find more to worry about.
too, more houses are built with poor drainage and are built with poor mehods almost on the ground, leading not only to mold, but to flooding and to termite damage.
just go to your local building site and watch if you don not believe me.
that's the price you pay for always shaving costs.

It depends where you are. In the San Francisco area, it was a huge problem during the El Nino year of 1997-1998.
