Isn't that funny? Humans have a hard time concentrating on two things at once, so if the music is loud, it distracts us from what we are searching for...

I think its usually because when you are driving on the highway, the sound of the engine, road and wind is louder and you turn the radio up

when you are looking for an address, you slow down and then the background noise is less and you realize how loud the radio was

Because there really is no such thing as multitasking. We are not able to think about two things at the exact same time. To test this write you name, full address, home number, and cell number...all things you know by heart, and recite a long verse that you know well, both at the same time with out switching back and forth.. It will be hard and full of stumbles. Those are two things you know well, it becomes almost impossible when challenged by two things that are not so familiar.

One less distraction. This way you won't hear a commercial with a phone number that is close to the address you are looking for, etc.

Because your trying to think and look for the address at the same time.Music can be distracting when your looking for something that you've never been to.

It's all psychological. While turning down the radio will not make you conentrate better on the directions, it will just calm your conscuious that there are less distractions.

Music, loud noises, etc, all provide distraction. It's just a way of eliminating the most obvious distraction.

I do that all the time, I think it's automatic so we can concentrate on finding the address.
