Personally I would get a betta for your vase rather than a goldfish. Goldfish are a cold water fish, they require more oxygen than a betta does. Bettas evolved to live in oxygen poor waters - they even have a rudimentary 'lung' type organ to help them survive. Goldfish are also 'dirty' fish, they eat a lot and poop a lot. Without a filter or air system in the water (an air pump) the goldfish isn't going to last very long.

No matter what they show in the cartoons, goldfish really don't belong in bowls.

I would argue neither do bettas, but since you are set on getting a fish, a betta would be a better choice.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Put some flowers in that vase young lady. A vase is not a proper home for any fish.

The basics on goldfish:

They need at least 20g to start with and then 10g per additional fish. Why? They can get to over a foot in length and produce a lot of ammonia. A LOT of ammonia in their waste.

Because of this ammonia, they need a strong filter and an air pump for fresh oxygen. They also need 20-25% of the water vacuumed each week.

Whoever tells you that the goldfish can survive in that....thing....is dead wrong and just continue to spread this wicked torturous myth around. They don't give a damn about your goldie. Please don't listen to them.

Get yourself a good tank.

Edit: Bettas do not belong in vases either. They need about 2.5g of water with a heater, filter, and air pump just like any other fish. Just because they lived in puddles in the wild, does not mean they can do it here. Mainly since most of the fish for sale was bred here! They do not have their own ecosystem in your bowl!!!

Well, I had a small one in a small glass bowl, and one time I got lazy and didn't clean his water for like 3 days and he grew a green boil on his head, I was so freaked out and frightened that I flushed him down the tiolet. Needless to say, I never had a goldfish ever again after that.

NO NO NO!!!
Goldfish need at least 10 gallons each. Even the "feeder fish" need a lot more room than what you have.
Get a Betta. They are completely happy in close quarters and really don't need anything else to be happy.
Good luck

goldfish are the easiest to maintain, change the water every week and use distilled water not tap water (too much chlorine in it) and don't forget to feed him/her/it. Only give as much food as it can eat in one or two minutes. If there's still food floating after 5 mins, you gave it too much. Feed twice a day, morn and eve.

DONT PUT THEM IN A VASE...they need a air system..a filter...they need oxygen in their water..Ive tried this and they died I went to the pet store and this is what they said to me..In my opinion Goldfish are pains in the butt...they have high amounts of ammonia in their urine and feces that sets up algae in the tank..

That will be sufficient to keep a single small goldfish in, but you'll have to change the water regularly, and feed it.

Goldfish are one of the easiest fish to maintain. However, they are quite dirty and grow quickly.
