There is nothing better then a pet to spend time with - especially with their unconditional love. Go to a shelter and pick the cat that picks you. You will feel a lot better giving a home to an animal that so desperately needs one.

Yes, pet therapy can help you. I've often seen it with sick people, the pets can sense the sickness and really care. It's a proven fact that people with pets are happier than those without. The good thing about a pet is that it on't let you down, and won;t judge you. Pet Therapy, also known as Animal Assisted Therapy is the use of trained animals and their handlers to achieve specific physical, cognitive, social and emotional goals with people and patients requiring care. Pet ownership or visiting therapeutic animals can have a range of benefits.
Pets may motivate and encourage the elderly to stay healthy and exercise and give the elderly a feeling of being needed. Motor skills can be improved or learned with the assistance of an animal trained for pet therapy and the creative inclusion of an animal in the life or therapy of a person with an illness or disability can make a major difference in their comfort, progress and recovery. If you are interested in doing it, you can easily just get a puppy or kitten from any pet shop or even the pound. But if you are interested in the program itself, here are some sites I have found for you:
http://www.deltasocietyaustralia.com.au/
http://www.velmaspetsastherapy.com.au/program.html
http://www.holisticonline.com/stress/stress_pet-therapy.htm
Hope this helps.

Pets, in themselves, are good therapy. Start with a goldfish, (really) and work up into higher life forms. They teach you responsibility, and return affection. I mean, fish don't but they will get you into thinking about a responsible routine for caring for an animal.
