I don't know the difference between the two but I do have them both. Anti-virus is the one who discovers the virus and gets off your computer but it has to scan all the documents on your computer and it takes a while. I think anti-spyware stops any thing you don't want coming on to your computer. I'm not to sure about the anti-spyware but that's what I think it does.

Anti-Spyware catches Spyware
Anti-Virus catches Viruses

Though in some cases Virusus can include spyware applications that install alongside it. And some spyware applications can include viruses.

Yes, you have to install both. If you are a home user (or a non-profit organization) then there are a number of programs for you. Personally I like AVG Free Anti-Virus, http://free.grisoft.com/ but other options include Avast, http://www.avast.com/ or Anti-Vir, http://www.free-av.com/ (use only one)

As far as Anti-Spyware goes, you need several programs to catch everything (use them all).

Adaware SE Personal
Spybot S&D
Windows Defender
ZeroSpyware
XoftSpy
SpywareBlaster

(Doing a search for those on any search engine will turn up download links). Also search for ZoneAlarm Firewall or Sygate Personal Firewall (use only one).

In todays day and age you need both anti-spyware and anit-virus... spyware and viruses are two different things....

SPYWARE
any software that covertly gathers information about a user while he/she navigates the Internet and transmits the information to an individual or company that uses it for marketing or other purposes

VIRUS
A computer program that is designed to replicate itself by copying itself into the other programs stored in a computer. It may be benign or have a negative effect, such as causing a program to operate incorrectly or corrupting a computer's memory.

yes they are different
Spyware is potentially more dangerous beast than Adware because it can record your keystrokes, history, passwords, and other confidential and private information. Spyware is often sold as a spouse monitor, child monitor, a surveillance tool or simply as a tool to spy on users to gain unauthorized access. Spyware is also known as: snoopware, PC surveillance, key logger, system recorders, Parental control software, PC recorder, Detective software and Internet monitoring software.

In computer security technology, a virus is a self-replicating program that spreads by inserting copies of itself into other executable code or documents (for a complete definition: see below). Thus, a computer virus behaves in a way similar to a biological virus, which spreads by inserting itself into living cells. Extending the analogy, the insertion of the virus into a program is termed infection, and the infected file (or executable code that is not part of a file) is called a host. ...

Viruses are destructive programs that spread themselves through networks, e-mail attachments and infected files

Spywares are programs that download from the Internet and cause pop up ads to appear nonstop on your computer. They may also redirect to your browser to always go to their site and do other annoying and harmful things

You do need both anti-vrius and anti-spyware software

For free spyware. Run both Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections.

For free anti-virus. Run AVG from http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_405a782.exe

Spyware--is little program that keep track of your inforation, they can also take the information and send it to someone(all of that without you knowing it)
Virus - on the other hand will destroy you files.
Yes you should install both of them, so that you are fully protected. I use ZoneAlarm(it has both in 1 package)
some other ones: SpySweaper, SpyBot, Norton Antivirus.
