if i buy an electric guitar, do i have to have an amp in order to have enjoyable or nondisappointing sounds?

Yes. If you're going to play electric guitar, you need an amp (head) and speaker cabinet (4x12 is the best) to get sound and having the amp will allow you to adjust your sound to your preference. You could also buy a preamp or some effects pedals to get even more finally tuned adjustments and effects.

If you cannot afford an amplifier and speaker cabinet, buy an acoustic guitar to get by until you can afford a good amp and speaker cab.

well yea u might but there's a cheaper method, its just a little jack that u put a cord in ur guitar and then in the jack and then put a headphone. its like 4 dollars instead of a 100 dollar amp.

yes, you need some kind of speaker for the sound to come out of.

you could also get something called a "rockman", its the size of a portable CD player, and runs on batteries. You plug your guitar into that and it puts the sound direct to headphones. Great for practicing without pissing off people.
