You cannot own, sell, buy, or breed them. If you are caught with them they will be confiscated and sent out of the state.

Only an approved ferret rescue can have them. If you're caught with one, it will probably just be taken away and given to the rescue organization. They are illegal because they can be very destructive if they get free. They are 100% illegal to have, buy or sell, but people do it anyway.

I don't know the ferret laws--although you can't buy or sell ferrets in California. Generally, if you bring them over, from say Arizona, they generally don't do anything to you if you are "caught" with them here. Lots of pet stores, including PetCo sell the ferret stuff, so people in CA have them.
Just don't be obnoxious when you have them out, and keep them happy and well trained. Ferrets are destructive when they are bored.
