first of all IGG22 PET rats are healthy and clean animals....sewer rats are what YOU are thinking about. and you obviously have never had rats or you wouldn't have made such an UNEDUCATED statement.
rats are highly intelligent social animals. they are excellent pets!
I've had rats for years! they are MUCH better than hamsters...which i have also raised. rats rarely bite, usually only reserving that for someone that is hurting them.
they are friendly and sweet like dogs, and they are independent and self sufficient like cats.
they LOVE to cuddle and play, and my rats were taught how to use a litter box like a cat.
they were clean and healthy pets, and had a vet check up every six months. i bred a pair for several years before i finally had the male neutered..*which is possible to do, lots of ppl don't know that* they are excellent parents!
rats are small and don't take up much space, they love a multi level cage that allows them room to climb and LOVE playing with toys...like cats or ferrets.
there really is nothing you can add to what you've done so far. you might need to take a different approach.
ask you mother WHY she doesn't want the rats, then research HER concerns TOGETHER on line.
ask her to just give you a CHANCE to show her WHY they are important to you. ask her to give you the same respect that you have her in presenting a well thought out argument why you should have them.
perhaps you will find out what her real reason is...and maybe you can work through the "fear" (that is what it most likely IS) together.
remember that ppl are afraid of things because they don't understand them. and once they realize that the "big horrible thing" really isn't all that bad...they tend to loose that fear.
GOOD LUCK! and remember...even if she doesn't let you...you can ALWAYS have a pet rat when you are out on your own. *might take some patients to wait that long..but in the end its worth it*

She may have zoophobia an irrational fear to animals (rats in her case) and being irrational you will not be able to convince her with arguments. I hate rats can't face the sight of them without panicking, a 12 PowerPoint presentation would terrify me even though I rationally know that rats (including those on the pictures) are not going to attack me.
If she's zoophobic there is no dice, probably a hamster will be a good compromise for both.

you could get her to look at this website, it answers a lot of questions about rats. http://id.essortment.com/ratspets_rkls.htm
She probably has the same idea I had at one time and thinks they are laden with all kinds of diseases and that they bite and aren't nice. Then I looked after a friends two fancy rats and ended up being totally attached to them because they make wonderful pets. There are just so many misconceptions about these gorgeous animals that you really need to get your mum to read up on them and maybe take her to a pet store that has some so that she can see first hand how totally adorable they. And they're very clean :)
Good luck

Well, the only thing I can think of to suggest is to take her to Petsmart or some pet store with you, and ask the Small Animal Specialist there, or someone that could help you, the positive things about keeping a rat or two, and how they aren't much different than other "more welcomed" pets.
She may, like a lot of people, just have some negative stigma about them, even if she's never seen a pet rat. A lot of people think of them as stinky, dirty sewer rats that carry diseases. But really, the ones at Pets stores aren't like that, and a mouse or hamster is just as hard to care for, smelly, and dirty.
My friend had one, and I quickly learned how they really are. Maybe you could try expressing to her that you would really, really love to have one, maybe for your birthday? If she thinks of them negatively, or the reason she doesn't want one has something to do with the way people think of them, try randomly explaining, out of nowhere, or at the dinner table, some facts like how they're much easier to care for than dogs and cats, but rats are also very social and such....
I'm sorry if none of t hat works, but good luck! A lot of people think they're nasty animals, but they're actually very adorable, fun, and social.

Good luck. I love rats. Try to find out why she doesn't like them. If it's the tail she doesn't like you can find tailless rats. I just saw that in a new rat care book I got. Look up some rat sites on the web and show her all the good points like they bite less than hamsters and are intelligent. Make sure you dispel the common myths like they carry disease because pet rats don't. If all else fails, wait until your older and can move out to get one.

Amazing effort on your part! Pet rats are intelligent, loving and very clean animals. Keep pestering her. Is there a pet shop near you that both you and your mum can visit? Do a deal - so many jobs around the house in exchange for a visit to the pet shop. Tell her that the BBC has a page devoted to rats so they must be ok!

Just don't give up...

Your mom is a goober smooch. Rats are adorable! They are the most snuggleable animal ever! I love my buddies! Let her hold a buddy and she will want one. There are lots of local ratteries check out the internet. As opposed to pet store rats, a rat from a local breeder will be much tamer and better kept. They love dried out banana and fresh strawberries. Never feed them peanut butter they will choke on it. Get your mom to feed one in her hand. rats are clean animals. the cage rats don't normally carry diseases. however, wild rats do have a higher risk. if she is think of the black plague. it was the fleas, and unsanitary conditions that they lived in not rats. besides they refered to mice. rats and mice are not even related.

the best thing would be for you to respect her feelings and not bring the rat around her. just take good care of it and play with it out of her site, just to show respect and good manners. don't press the issue. after a while she should come around, or at least respect you for your care of your pet.
you can't change her (or anybody, for that matter). just do your best and give her space.

Just go up to her and say, "there's a difference between rodents, and DOMESTIC rodents: the other ones are cuter, social with humans, and that it was scientifically shown that house pets lower high blood preasure even if they get on your nerves."
